Salt Lamps and EMFs

I get this question more often than not so I thought I’d shine some light on the subject (I know, bad joke but I couldn’t help myself…).

But seriously.

Do they really work?

To be honest, salt lamps can help but probably not in the way that you’re thinking.

So let me explain.

Electronics such as our cell phones, TVs and other appliances produce an overload of positively charged ions (in addition to EMF fields). And we as humans, get “charged up” and can actually carry these positively charged ions on our skin (think static electricity), clothing made out of synthetic fabrics, furniture made out of synthetic materials or have synthetic finishes to name a few.

Salt, whether it’s plain table salt, Celtic sea salt, Himalayan salt, etc… is LOADED with negative ions.

If you take a salt lamp or a pile of Himalayan salt chunks and place it on a desk or nightstand, the salt itself will help balance out the ratio of positive and negative ions in our environment.

So from a technical standpoint, it doesn’t actually block or shield you against any of the EMF fields that are transmitting from your phone, laptop or other devices.

It just helps balance out the positive to negative ion ratio. And that in itself has downstream effects that can help you from an EMF perspective.

Another thing to consider is that as soon as you plug your salt lamp into an outlet, two types of EMF fields (AC direct and AC magnetic) are created even if it’s not actually turned on! And that of course, defeats the whole purpose…

If you reallllly love the vibe and energy from your salt lamp, here’s what I did to make mine low-EMF:

  1. Removed the actual bulb component piece from the lamp itself – most lamps like this one allow you to easily do this
  2. Bought some larger Himalayan salt chunks and placed them on top of the lamp
  3. Placed a tealight votive in the center

Voila! Light the candle and you’re good to go. I get the benefits of adding the negative ions to my environment and I still get the yummy vibe it creates in my home!

XO!
